Harold Edwin Holm Knight Jr.

Southold resident Harold Edwin Holm Knight Jr., formerly of Garden City died at his home April 7. He was 85.  Known to family and friends as “Chip” and “Hal”, Mr. Knight was born March 23, 1930, in Brooklyn to Dorothy and Harold Knight Sr. He graduated from Yale in 1952.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1960, achieving the rank of captain. During his time of service, he was stationed at Okinawa, Japan.

Mr. Knight was a former vice-president and secretary for Brooklyn Union Gas, where he worked for 40 years and was one of the first employees to receive his own personal computer.

He was a former trustee of Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and a member of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue. He served as president of Garden City Community Fund, The Brooklyn Club, and Brooklyn Boys Scouts of America.

Family members said Mr. Knight loved cars – especially a 1988 Mazda RX7 – and purchased a new car every few years. He also enjoyed sailing his Hobie craft boat, water skiing, playing golf, photography and wood work. His family also said he was a man of his word who was kind and loved solving problems.

Predeceased by his sister, Patricia Spencer, Mr. Knight is survived by his second wife, Maia, whom he married March 2, 2012 in Southold, her two children and two grandchildren; and four nephews.

 

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, April 14, from 3 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, with a funeral service taking place at 6 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Peter Kelley. Interment will be private.
