Brendan House group home plans to open this summer
It’s taken two years for Brendan House to get this far.
And New Beginnings founder Alysson Scerri says that’s pretty good.
“We’re really just about there,” she said. “We’re just so thankful for our community and for the tons of support we have gotten.”

New Beginnings, the nonprofit organization founded by Ms. Scerri after her father suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2007, has been building the medical care facility on Sound Avenue.
The home totals more than 4,000 square feet and is capable of housing 12 people and providing them with round-the-clock care. The project is now entering the “final phase of construction,” Ms. Scerri said.
“We don’t have a grand opening date yet, but it’s going to be sometime this summer,” she said.
Ms. Scerri thanked donors, local businesses and community groups for stepping up to help with construction. Thousands of dollars in sprinklers, fire alarms, insulation and sheetrock were donated by businesses like Riverhead Building Supply and JP Hunter Co., as well as private individuals, she said.
Another $10,000 is needed to finish the project, which includes installing an elevator, she said, adding Brendan House is expected to get more support through a planned golf outing next month.
“With everyone giving us a boost, that kind of community support rolls over,” Ms. Scerri said. “It’s been one group after another.”
