Maria Conklin Martocchia

Longtime Greenport resident Maria Conklin Martocchia died April 15. She was 65. 

She was born Sept. 5, 1949, in Greenport to Lillian (Christiansen) and Robert Conklin Sr. and graduated from Mattituck High School in 1968. She later received an associate degree from Suffolk County Community College.

She married Jerome Martocchia Feb., 14, 1992, in Greenport.

Ms. Martocchia served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1971, achieving the rank of sergeant. For her military service, she received National Defense Service and Air Force Good Conduct medals. Ms. Martocchia retired after working on Plum Island for 30 years.

She was an American Legion member. Family members said she  enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, cross-stitching, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

Predeceased by her husband, Jerome; her parents and her two brothers, Robert and Leroy, Ms. Martocchia is survived by her sons, James and Christopher Herbstritt; her stepsons, Jerry Jr., Tony and Joseph Martocchia; her sister, Carol McCaffrey of Cutchogue; ten grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The family received visitors April 19 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.
