Cutchogue News: NoFo Glow party coming to Mattituck H.S.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this week’s column. Sometimes, hard as we may try to find the good in something, we can’t. The Southold house fire that took the life of Sidney Abbott seems senseless. There are no words to express one’s feelings to a family who has lost a child after living with that child’s illness. Our hearts go out to Chad and Jen Menard, sister Lila and grandparents Rich and Carolyn Menard and Susie and Jeff Smith for the loss of their Livi. May God’s grace and the love of family and friends ease your pain.

Calling all ‘Wonder Women’: Donna Carnevale invites you to join the East End Wonder Women team and participate in the first Tunnel to Tower Climb May 17 in NYC. Interested? Call Donna at 734-2577.

The North Fork Alliance is a coalition striving to build community awareness about and reduce substance abuse among local youth. Liaison Lynn Nyilas and the town’s Youth Advisory Council recently visited 101.7 Beach Radio in Water Mill, where they were interviewed, recorded a PSA they wrote about the dangers of e-cigarettes and guest-hosted Hot 5 at Noon. Check out their interview here. The next alliance meeting is set for Wednesday, May 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Mattituck-Laurel Library. For more information, call Lynn at 516-617-1054 or check out the alliance’s Facebook page.

This weekend, April 25 and 26, is your last chance to see the Old Town Arts and Craft Guilds exhibition, “Historical Art Collections of the North Fork.” For details, visit oldtownartsguild.org.

Don’t want to cook tonight? You can eat out or bring home a takeout meal from the Southold Rotary’s annual barbecue chicken and ribs dinner. Don’t miss this popular fundraiser at the Soundview restaurant today, April 23, from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Proceeds support local scholarships and Rotary Club projects.

NOFO GLOW is coming — an evening celebration on Saturday, May 9, from 5 to 9 p.m. (rain date May 15) at the new Mattituck High School track. Experience the obstacle course and run or walk on the new track. The NJROTC will conduct a flag ceremony and the MHS Select Chorus and North Fork Academy of Dance will perform, followed by a DJ dance party. Tickets — $7 or $5 for students — are available at Handy Pantry, Love Lane Sweet Shoppe and Cutchogue East Elementary School or you can register online.

The PTA will host an informal discussion with Superintendent Anne Smith, school board president Jerry Diffley and vice president Charlie Anderson on Tuesday, April 28, at 9 a.m. in the Cutchogue East library. Learn about new district programs and initiatives and discuss the school’s plans to implement new technology and how that technology will affect your children.

Mattituck High School presents “You Can’t Take It With You,” a three-act comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. Show dates are April 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m.

The Cutchogue Fire Department and its ladies auxiliary recently installed new officers at an awards dinner at East Wind. Chief William Brewer was sworn in as CFD’s 42nd chief. Other appointments were first assistant chief Lawrence Behr, second assistant chief William Burns and Captain Amos Meringer. Outgoing chief Antone Berkoski received proclamations and gifts in recognition of his service. Firefighter Andre “Bud” Bubulski was honored for 60 years of active service. Thank you all and congratulations!

Welcome home, Michael Lessard. May your days be filled with good health.
