Greenport board meetings on Thursday nights? Maybe

The Greenport Village Board will vote on whether to move its monthly meetings to Thursday nights instead of Monday evenings, a move that Mayor-elect George Hubbard says may increase participation from the community.

The new board — featuring Mr. Hubbard and two newcomers, Jack Martilotta and Doug Roberts — will be sworn in at a special meeting Monday evening. One of the first orders of business will be deciding whether to move the meeting times.

Under the proposed change, work sessions would be held on the third Thursday of the month, with regular meetings on the fourth Thursday, Mr. Hubbard said. The meetings would be held at 7 p.m., an hour later than they are now.

The meetings had been held on Thursdays a decade ago, but about six years ago the meetings were moved to Monday, largely to accommodate The Suffolk Times’ print schedule, Mr. Hubbard said.

But now the meetings may be put back on for Thursday nights, which Mr. Hubbard said would give village employees more time to prepare for meetings and would hopefully allow more residents to attend.

“We’re closed Saturday and Sunday so it didn’t leave time for the village staff to get stuff done,” Mr. Hubbard said. “This is supposed to make it easier and more convenient for everyone.”

The reorganization meeting where the meeting schedule will be voted on will be held at 6 p.m. tonight in the schoolhouse.
