Greenport News: Supermarket food drive starts Saturday

There’s an old adage that states, “Out with the old and in with the new.” Greenport High School has put a new twist on it. They’re now proclaiming, “Out with the new and in with the old.” You see, due to family commitments, interim high school principal Bill Caulfield’s last day at GHS was last Thursday — but fear not. Former interim principal Bob Feeney will return until plans can be finalized for our permanent principal. We have been extremely fortunate to have both of these gentlemen at our high school.

CAST’s first supermarket food drive of the season is this Saturday, April 11, at the Greenport IGA from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. If you can’t make a contribution on that day, look for CAST’s collection bins at stores, where nonperishable food items can be dropped. CAST also accepts food donations and gift cards at its Front Street office weekdays from 6 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Call 477-1717 for more information.

Orient Congregational Church Preschool will hold registration for the 2015-16 school year and summer camp on Saturday, April 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. The school offers morning classes for 3- and 4-year-olds. For more information, call 323-1316 or visit orientpreschool.com.

Coach Dorrie Jackson left a lasting memory with many a young man during his time at GHS. In celebration of Porter football, “Dorrie’s boys” are invited to a football player reunion at Skipper’s Restaurant on Saturday, July 4, at 7 p.m. Old football films will be shown during the get-together. For more information, contact Craig Geier at 477-2545 or [email protected].

I am more than ecstatic to announce the marriage of my brother Bobby Heaney to Diane Gagen. In true Irish fashion, the happy couple got married in Florida on St. Paddy’s Day. I wish them a lifetime of happiness together. Welcome to the family, Diane.

The Heaney family just keeps on growing! Congratulations are in order for Jessica (Heaney) and Chris Pollina, the proud parents of a baby girl, Elisa Heaney Pollina, who arrived March 25 and tipped the scales at seven pounds, seven ounces. Congratulations!

Birthday wishes go out to Lindsay Riemer and Jessica Golden on April 9; Matilda Palmore and Bobby Doucett on the 10th; Melanie Recchion and Paige Pope on the 11th; my uncle and family patriarch Bernie Heaney, Jason Grattan, Debbie Schade, Valerie Gatz, my cousin Sue Krukoski and Caitlin Jacobs on the 12th; Robert White III, Steve Damiani, Kaitlin McElroy, John Ramirez and two more cousins, Kassandra Chouinard and Ed Bondarchuk, on the 13th; another cousin (yes, I have lots), Theresa Bubb, and Babette Cornine on the 14th; Carol Mills and Joe Leonard on the 15th; Tammi Martinez, Charlie Manwaring, Thomas Karavas, Lisa Israel, Bill Bogardus, AnnMarie Torres and Christine Aviles on the 17th; my nieces Caitlin Tooker and Justine Parker on the 18th; Pat Barszczewski, Bill Rhinow and Michael Murphy on the 19th; Mary Saetta on the 20th; and yet another cousin, Sean Heaney, along with Josh Finno, Daniel Holmes Jr. and Tiffany Zurek Smith on the 22nd.
