Mattituck News: Gearing up for NoFo Glow Night

April is over and May is arriving, with moments to honor our mothers, events for the whole family to gather and days to celebrate the Taurus birthdays in our lives.

Mother’s Day is next weekend and with it comes a chance to see our students share their talents at the Mattituck’s Got Talent event, slated for Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Come support our local kids as they take the stage.

The following evening, Saturday, May 9, the Mattituck Athletic Booster Club will host a night to remember: NoFo Glow Night. Beginning at 5 p.m. around the new high school track, NJROTC, the Mattituck High School Select Chorus and North Fork Academy of Dance will open an evening of fun for the whole family. A dance party begins at 9:30 p.m. with a 50/50 raffle drawing at 10 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for general admission and can be purchased at Handy Pantry, Love Lane Sweet Shoppe and Cutchogue East Elementary School. The first 100 registrants get a free T-shirt; register at mufsd.com. Come run, walk or dance the night away! Rain date is Friday, May 15.

Earlier on May 9, Peconic Landing will host May Mile, a 5K run and one-mile walk/run around its Greenport campus. Advance registration for the 5K is $25 for adults, $15 for students or $30 the day of the event. Advance entry for the walk/run is $15 per adult and $10 for kids 12 and under or 62 and older. All registrants get a T-shirt; sign up at peconiclanding.com/may-mile-2015/.

Summer brings class reunions and the MHS Class of 1975 plans to get together Saturday, Aug. 8, to celebrate its 40th reunion. If you’re interested in attending, contact Donna Wilsberg at [email protected] or Jeff Strong at [email protected]. If any other classes are planning to celebrate decades or more reunions, contact me so I can include it in this space.

Birthday candles will be ablaze for the following May babies in the next two weeks. Happy birthday to Julia Gammon, John Cushman, Erin Nardolillo, Cindy Pumillo, Jim Christy, Nicole Ann Krupski, Abby Pacholk, Linda Diorio, Owen Finnegan, Dennis and Donald Deerkoski, Sandy Gannon, James Burns, Ted Richert, Nolan Heintz, Devyn Ulmet, Hannah Baglivi, Liam Finnegan, Ned Baker, Chris Rehm, Mike Shanahan, Colleen Shanahan, Lainie Dubinsky, Michael Kar, Dorothy Sullivan, Jessica Boomer, Eamon Deegan, Sherri Kelly, Dennis Case, Julie Krudop and Steve Cook.

A special belated birthday wish goes out to Alex Bradley, who cut his cake April 29.

Just a reminder: Mattituck-Laurel Library will host an open house Friday, May 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. to wish Kay Zegel a happy retirement and to congratulate Jeff Walden on his new position as director. All community members are welcome.

Motherhood is the most challenging, yet most rewarding, job in the world. As Mother’s Day approaches, take time to think about the minutes, hours and years your mom has dedicated to making your life great, and say “thank you.”
