PSEG probing cause of power failure; Greenport Village helping out
More than 6,000 Southold Town residents were left in the dark when a PSEG substation failed around 11 p.m. Tuesday night, and PSEG officials say the cause is under investigation.
The malfunction caused a wide spread blackout from Southold to Orient, leaving 6,462 homes without electricity, PSEG spokeswoman Elizabeth Flagler said, adding that the majority of people had their power restored within 15 minutes of the outage.
All power was restored by 2 a.m, she said.
Though Greenport Village has its own power plant, residents there were also impacted by the PSEG substation failure.
“[PSEG’s] substation feeds us and that is why we were out,” village administrator Paul Pallas said Wednesday morning.
Villagers were without power until roughly 12:20 a.m.
The village’s Moores Lane power plant is currently feeding electric into the PSEG grid and is running one of its generators to assist in reducing the strain on the system, according to a statement released by the village.
As a result, the village is requesting its electric customers reduce their power consumption as much as possible in the next 24 hours.
The cause of the substation malfunction is still under investigation, Ms. Flagler said.
