The Southold Town Planning Board has approved a site plan for a proposal to construct an indoor riding ring on a prominent 37-acre Cox Neck Road estate.

Royalton Equestrian plans to build a 28,800-square-foot indoor riding ring on an existing horse farm as part of a riding academy, according to town documents.

The property — which is the former home of Long Island Aquarium co-founder Jim Bissett — currently includes a 14,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom house, ATC track and indoor/outdoor pool. It was purchased for $4 million in January. Dr. Daniel Ferrara, a physician who runs a home visiting service in Hauppauge, and property manager Steve Libretto of Mattituck first submitted the proposal to the Planning Board in August.

Southold Town planning director Heather Lanza said after Monday’s meeting that the applicants’ next step will be filing a building permit.
