Drivers heading to the Hess station in Mattituck today might have noticed something different: It wasn’t a Hess station.

About a year after the gas station sold its retail locations to Ohio-based Marathon Petroleum for $2.82 billion, Hess stations in the metro New York area — including the local outlets — are now being converted to Speedways, which are owned by Marathon.

According to the company, not much else will change beside the signage. The same employees Hess had on staff will remain, and just as Hess did, Speedway will offer the same price for credit as it does for cash.

“While the ID signs at these locations may have changed, customers will be greeted by the same friendly, helpful store associates they have come to know and appreciate,” according a spokesperson.

About 180 locations in and around New York City are being converted from Hess to Speedway, which has 2,750 locations in 22 states.

The only Hess station located in Southold Town is in Mattituck, on Main Road. Others, in Riverhead Town, can be found at the corner of Wading River-Manor Road and Sound Avenue in Wading River, and two more on Route 58 in Riverhead.
