Southold News: Celebrate a Victorian tea at museum
Tourist season on the North Fork officially starts this weekend. I hope you all find time to enjoy the area as so many of our tourists do. Be careful on the roads. There will be more motorcycles, bicycles and cars.

Horton Point Lighthouse opens for the season this weekend from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed to work two 2.5- hour shifts per month. Could you be one of them? The lighthouse is open weekends through Columbus Day, as well as holidays that fall on Mondays during that period. For more information, contact Claire at [email protected] or 323-3660.
The Southold Presbyterian Women will hold their first barn sale of the season Saturday, May 23, at the historic barn on Wells Avenue, behind Bank of America, from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. You’ll find furniture, jewelry, porcelain, glassware, household items, fishing poles, etc. Proceeds are contributed to local charities.
The Southold Town animal shelter is still accepting donations for its second annual Tags for Wags yard sale, to be held at the shelter Saturday, June 6. For information, call 765-1811, ext 1. While you’re shopping for treasures there, why not drop off a donation of food for the shelter’s food pantry? Kiddie pools are also needed.
The Southold Historical Society, in association with First Presbyterian Church of Southold, will host a Victorian tea on its museum grounds Sunday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. to celebrate Southold Town’s 375th anniversary. Along with the scenic setting, attendees will enjoy tea sandwiches and assorted sweets. Pre-registration is advised, as space is limited. Contact Chris Wruck at 765-4614 to make your reservation. A small donation would be appreciated.
The historical society will also host an exhibit of works by fiber artist Marilyn Bottjer, which opens with a reception Friday, June 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Cosden-Price Gallery in the Reichert Family Center on Main Road. Members of the Class of 1982 from Southold High School will celebrate 50th birthdays together this year on Saturday, July 18. All classmates and their significant others are invited to gather at 7 p.m. at Sophie’s on Bayview Road in Southold for light food, drinks at reduced prices and lots of great laughs. Virginia Rubin, who works at Peconic Bay Home Health Agency, recently won the Home Care Nurse of the Year award. She has earned this award in the past as well. The award goes to a registered nurse who demonstrates excellence in the areas of dignity, compassionate care, community, quality and stewardship. Congratulations, Virginia!

As a somber reminder, please take time this weekend to pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country. Memorial Day honors those who have died while serving in the Armed Forces. Also, thank those veterans who came home with untold horrors to remember. Thank you for your service.
