SUFFOLK COUNTY CLASS C TOURNAMENT | TUCKERS 16, ROYALS 8
The Mattituck/Greenport/Southold boys lacrosse team made some history on Thursday and the Tuckers hope that they’re not quite finished yet.
Not only did they host their first playoff game, but they also registered their first postseason win, a 16-8 home victory over Port Jefferson in a Suffolk County Class C Tournament semifinal.
Now, the Tuckers (11-2) find themselves headed to their first county championship game against Babylon at Stony Brook University on Wednesday.
Junior attackman Tim Schmidt led the way for the Tuckers with seven goals. Senior midfielder Jack DiGregorio added three goals and two assists as they eliminated the Royals (7-8), a first-year team.
Mattituck twice enjoyed 5-0 streaks. The Tuckers began the game with five-goal spurt and with the game on the line, they rattled off five unanswered goals at the start of the fourth quarter to turn a 10-7 lead into a more comfortable 15-7 margin with 6 minutes 46 seconds remaining.
In fact, they struck for three vital goals within 45 seconds in the opening minute of the fourth period. Only nine seconds into the quarter, sophomore attackman James Hoeg (three assists) scored his lone goal of the game. Junior midfielder Jeff Hauser (two goals, two assists) added one with the period only 38 seconds old and junior midfielder Dylan Marlborough, who won 25 of 26 face-offs, climaxed a brilliant run off a face-off 54 seconds into the fourth as the Tuckers raised their lead to 13-7.
Schmidt’s sixth goal of the game was a spectacular one as he finished off some quick, fancy passing along with Hauser and Hoeg at 4:22 of the period for a 14-7 advantage.
Port Jefferson’s Chandler Sciara and Brian Mark finished with two goals apiece.
