Mr. Brown was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at an early age, and at the young age of 21, was killed in a car accident five years ago while on his way to Suffolk County Community College.

A testament to his desire to keep moving on his own two feet despite the illness, the family switched the annual fundraiser from a fish fry to a run/walk event.

“Walking was so important to Michael,” Michael’s sister, Karre, told The Suffolk Times in April, recalling how much it meant to him every time he was able to shed his wheelchair and get around on his own two feet.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Michael Brown Memorial Scholarship.
