Bicyclist struck by truck in Southold, airlifted to hospital

A female bicyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after being struck by a truck in Southold Saturday afternoon.

The woman, 62-year-old Patrice Melley of Gilford, Conn., was hit while riding her bike down Route 25 near Laurel Avenue around 3 p.m., according to the Southold Fire Department and Southold Police.

A Suffolk County medevac landed at Southold High School shortly after the incident to transport the woman to the hospital.

Police said Charles Murray Jr., 58, of Shelter Island was driving a Chevrolet box truck westbound when he struck Ms. Melley on her bicycle. Mr. Murray’s truck was impounded and no charges were immediately filed, although the investigation is ongoing, police said.

The extent of Ms. Melley’s  injuries were not immediately made public.

Route 25 in the vicinity of the accident was closed temporarily as a result of the accident.
