Southold News: Southold junior plays cello at Carnegie Hall

June already? It just doesn’t seem possible. How have you been spending this glorious weather?

Birthdays are coming up for Bill Conway on June 7; Kerry Conrardy on the 11th; Sondra Russell on the 12th; and Chris Manfredi and Sally Anne Gray on June 16. Here’s to many more for you all!

Congratulations to 11th-grader Aidan Walker, who played the cello at Carnegie Hall this past weekend with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. This is the third time Aidan has participated. Southold Schools orchestra director Audrey Grathwohl joined his proud family at the performance.

A training session on preserving the Old Burying Ground at First Presbyterian Church of Southold will be held this Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. until approximately 5 p.m. You need not stay the entire time. This is the oldest part of the church cemetery and the grounds need cleaning. Volunteers age 14 and up are sought to learn how to do this properly. Come prepared to get dirty; gardening gloves and sunblock are suggested. For details, call Pat or Bill Milford at 765-5780. To sign up, call the church at 765-2597. The rain date is June 27.

The church will co-host a Victorian tea with Southold Historical Society on June 14 in honor of Southold Town’s 375th anniversary. The tea will be held at the SHS museum complex Sunday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. Along with a scenic setting, attendees will enjoy tea sandwiches and assorted sweets. The complex will also be open for tours. Reservations are suggested as space is limited. Contact Chris Wruck at 765-4614. A small donation would be appreciated.

The historical society needs volunteers to welcome visitors to the complex this summer on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Hours are flexible. High school and college students looking for valuable community service credits are welcome! Contact Tippy Case at [email protected] to inquire.

CAST’s first supermarket food drive of the season is Saturday, June 13, at the Southold and Greenport IGAs, King Kullen and Waldbaum’s. If you aren’t out shopping that day, you can donate nonperishable food items and/or gift cards at the CAST office Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 5 p.m. For drive hours, call 477-1717 or email [email protected].

Southold Elementary School teachers challenged students in grades 3 through 5 to read a set amount of books in 80 days. The “Read to Ride” Challenge riders were Mrs. Mellas, Mrs. Suter, Mrs. Kimmelmann, Mr. Munisteri, Coach Salerno, Coach Palmeri, Ms. Maisano, Mrs. Karnich, Mr. Maier and the principal, Mrs. O’Neill. The ride took place May 26, with each teacher riding from home and meeting the group along the way. What a wonderful way to encourage reading!

Support the Southold School Educational Foundation by purchasing an engraved game board square or border brick for a permanent chessboard on the elementary playground. Go to southoldef.org – Events, email [email protected] or call 765-8191 for more information. Funds will support programs for district students and help develop an alumni network. There are only a few chessboard squares remaining.

My next deadline is June 14. Please share your news so we may cheer and congratulate you too. Have a wonderful two weeks.
