Greenport Village wins $100,000 electrical survey through grant
Greenport Village has won a $100,000 feasibility study through a New York state grant program.
Best of all, they didn’t even have to apply.
The survey comes as part of a proposal submitted by Global Common, a power plant company interested in building a new facility at the scavenger waste plant on Moores Lane. The company has pitched a “peaking” plant with a capacity of 50 to 75 megawatts.
The plant would use natural gas as its primary fuel for high-efficiency engines that could throttle up or down depending on energy needs.
The company had applied for the state money earlier this spring, with the Village Board’s approval.
Administrator Paul Pallas said the grant —approved through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s Microgrid prize — would examine all the Village’s electrical infrastructure and make recommendations about potential upgrades and renewable energy sources.
Mayor George Hubbard said the study would be provided to the village free of charge. Even if Global Common’s proposal isn’t chosen to reach the next stage of the prize competition, the village would still be able to use the survey for its own planning purposes.
