Greenport School District

Greenport offering summer Regents exam courses for all

Following the example of school districts like Hampton Bays and Patchogue-Medford, Greenport will be offering Regents exam prep courses this summer for the first time ever. And the classes will be open to anyone who wants to attend, whether they’re Greenport students or not.

The program will run July and August for students in grades 7-12.

“[It’s] for our students in this region to be in best position possible to take the Regents and really help them move along going into next year,” said Greenport Superintendent David Gamberg. “We’re not trying to make it a hardship to progress in the next academic year’s education.”

Summer courses include classes in core subjects like English, science, mathematics and social studies. The program will also offer for-credit health and physical education classes.

Although the North Fork Summer School program, as it’s being called, is new, Mr. Gamberg said Greenport has operated somewhat similar programs in the past.

“There was some program offered essentially by computer,” he said. “It wasn’t as robust or engaging for students in the way being face-to-face with a teacher would be. Years and years ago there was a smaller version of a teacher-based program. This is the first time in quite a while that the North Fork has had an option to provide this for students.”

Mr. Gamberg said he has already heard interest about the program from district administrators elsewhere on the North Fork and beyond.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for our kids on the East End to be able to make up classes without having to go all the way, possibly, to Pat-Med,” said Shelter Island Superintendent Leonard Skuggevik. “There are not a whole lot of places that are able to do a summer school, due to all of the budget cuts that had to take place. I think this will be great for everybody.”

Mattituck Superintendent Ann Smith agreed.

“This is another opportunity for a student who would be preparing for the exam on their own or going [farther away],” she said. “It’s an easier location to get to.”

While local districts are interested in having students attend, Mr. Gamberg emphasized that the program isn’t limited to North Fork residents. Families who visit for the summer can also enroll their children.

The program is free for Greenport district students. For non-district students, the program costs $200 per school course, which includes a Regents review class and the opportunity to take a Regents exam. Without the school course, the Regents review and exam costs $175. The exam alone is $75.

Registration for Greenport students will take place at the Route 25 school Monday, June 29, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Non-district students can register at the school from 8 a.m. to noon June 30 or July 1.
