Cutchogue News: Friendship Walkway set for Aug. 15

October will mark 12 years since my first column appeared. Deciding to apply for the position was not easy for me. I hemmed and hawed until the “help wanted” ad appeared for the third time. One reason I decided to apply was the thought of being able to share the goodness in our schools and community that I was so thankful for. During that time, I’ve seen an honor roll with more students than the high honor roll transform into a high honor roll with more names on it than the honor roll. It’s no wonder that the Mattituck-Cutchogue school district was ranked fourth in the country! Here’s to all the students and their families, the administrators, faculty, coaches and organizations that make a difference in our community.

North Fork high school athletic teams and individuals were busy participating in state championships last weekend. Facebook was alive with activity, including The Suffolk Times’ live updates on the semi-final morning win and the Mattituck High School Tuckers’ varsity baseball team advancing to the Class B Championship game that afternoon. “4-0 top of the 4th”; “ 4-0 top of the 5th”; “Nine outs away from their first state title!!” said the Facebook posts. The MHS alumni page posted congratulations from the Classes of ’63 and ’83. The boys returned to a real hometown reception, complete with a police car and firetruck escort. The crowd roared as our blue and gold Tuckers got off the bus. Congratulations to the boys and their families for making it to this first-ever milestone and once-in-a-lifetime moment!

Sam Husak and Jack Dufton also deserve congratulations for their participation in the NYS track finals at the University at Albany. Way to go!

The Southold-Mattituck-Greenport NJROTC year-end awards dinner at Vineyard Caterers was packed to capacity with cadets and family members from all three North Fork high schools, as well as military and school dignitaries. Once again, Maj. William Grigonis “ran a tight ship,” ending the evening before 9:30 p.m. Considering the numerous awards given and the many thousands of dollars in scholarships, this was no small task. Early in June, the unit also gathered for Senior Night, where Senior Chief Turner’s slide show once again moved those present with smiles and laughter. This year’s executive officers shared memories of their service and welcomed a new slate of officers. Congratulations to all!

Members of the MHS Class of 1990 are invited to be this year’s 25th-year guests at commencement this Saturday, June 20, at 10 a.m. Seating will be reserved.

The Southold Mothers’ Club yard sale is Saturday, June 27 (rain date: June 28), from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2095 Elijahs Lane. If you have gently used things to donate or time to volunteer and help out, contact Morgan at [email protected] — or stop by to find that just-right baby item!

The North Fork Reform Synagogue invites you to the first of their summer beach services this Friday, June 19, at 6:15 p.m. at Kenney’s Beach, Southold. Bring a chair. Come early and bring your own dinner. For more information visit northforkreformsynagogue.org.

Here’s an opportunity to make a lasting impression: Cutchogue New Suffolk Library’s “Friendship Walkway.” Support the library by purchasing a walkway brick engraved with a name or message for $100. Bricks are limited and purchases must be made by Aug. 15, so stop by the library soon to learn more and place your order. For information on all the library’s upcoming events, visit cutchoguelibrary.org.

The Cutchogue Fire Department thanks the community for their support at the annual Victoria–Glover scholarship breakfast, which helps fund scholarships for local high school seniors.

Summer is almost upon us! Please keep in touch with your neighborhood news.

Happy Father’s Day!
