Cops: Man caught with stolen property while trespassing

A 38-year-old Greenport man is facing misdemeanor charges after he was caught “rummaging through a bedroom” in Greenport Saturday morning, Southold Town police said.

Jason Mealy of Greenport entered a house on Center Street without permission about 11:30 a.m. and was found by someone living there, according to a news release. He was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing, police said.

According to the release, Mr. Mealy, who has a long history of arrests locally, was also charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen property in connection with another incident. Police did not release details about that theft.

He was arraigned in Southold Town court and ordered to be held in county jail on bail, according to the police department. As of 7 p.m. Saturday, Mr. Mealy had not arrived in jail, according to a jail clerk. It was unclear if he had posted bail.
