Cops: Drunk Greenport man assaulted police officer

A Greenport man was arrested Thursday evening when he allegedly injured a police officer while drunk, Southold Town police said.

The man also faces endangering the welfare of a child charges as he was with three children at the time of the incident, according to police.

Police say 32-year-old Roody Harris was caught sleeping on the side of the road on South Street in Greenport about 7:40 p.m. as the kids were “running in the street,” according to a news release. A police officer woke Mr. Harris, who was “highly intoxicated” and became “belligerent” with the cop, according to the release.

Mr. Harris allegedly swore and caused a disturbance, then “physically assault[ed]” the officer when the cop tried to arrest him for disorderly conduct. Police said the cop suffered an arm injury in the fight.

Mr. Harris was eventually taken into custody and charged with felony assault, misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, police said.
