Art Beat: Paintings of Southold, past and present
• ‘Then & Now: Paintings of Southold’ will open Saturday, July 11, at Southold Historical Society’s Ann Currie-Bell House at the group’s Main Road museum complex.
The exhibit is being held in honor of Southold Town’s 375th anniversary. It will feature historic paintings of the North Fork alongside contemporary works of similar scenes.
Some of the earlier artists represented are Caroline M. Bell, Marguerite Hawkins, Edwin Prellwitz, Thomas Currie-Bell, Joseph B. Hartranft and William Steeple Davis.
Contemporary artists include Diane Alec-Smith, Adelaide Amend, Wendy Prellwitz, Jada Rowland and Ann McCaughey.
The contemporary works will be offered for sale, with 25 percent of proceeds benefiting the historical society.
The exhibit, open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., continues through Oct. 11.
• Sixteen artists have been chosen by East End Arts to participate in the second JumpstART professional development program that will culminate in a public art project in downtown Riverhead.
The artists are Maggie Bloomfield of Westhampton Beach, poetry and writing; Monica Chulewicz of Seaford, collage and printmaking; José Coropuna of Laurel, classical singing; Anne Drager of Montauk, visual arts; Barbara Jones of Greenlawn, abstract painting; Drew Kane of Huntington Station, painting; Susan Levy of Quogue, video production; Cara Lynch of Lindenhurst, installation, printmaking and painting; Andrea Manning of Babylon, painting and sculpture; Samantha Neukirch of Smithtown, drawing and illustration; Sarah Prescott of Orient, photography; Linda Purrazzella of Southampton, mosaics; Becca Seibert of Babylon, theater; Frank Sofo of East Hampton, painting and illustration; Courtney Surmanek of Centereach, interdisciplinary: performance and installation; and Stephanie Walsh of Medford, painting.
The artists who participated in the first JumpstART program last year are serving as mentors to the new class members.
The program’s art project will be presented to the public Friday, Aug. 7, in downtown Riverhead.

• The Corchaug Singers, directed by William Roslak, will perform “The Road Home,” a concert held in conjunction with Southold Town’s 375th anniversary, at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at First Presbyterian Church of Southold. The concert is hosted by the Southold Historical Society. The program will include music by Britten, Lauridsen, Brahms and Paulus.The choir features professional singers who are natives of Long Island.

• The gallery at Four & Twenty Blackbirds in Orient is featuring paintings by Aubrey Mayer.
• Photographers Karen Bell and Ennid Berger will give a free gallery talk at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Alex Ferrone Photography Gallery in Cutchogue. The gallery is showing “Translucent,” photos by Ms. Bell and Ms. Berger, through Aug. 9.
• “Photography, Illustrations and Creations,” work by Jessica Hagerman, is on view through August at Southold Free Library.
• The sculpture garden at Peconic Landing in Greenport is now open for tours. The garden, located on the grounds of Brecknock Hall, features 18 pieces by local and international artists. This year’s exhibition, “Art Without Barriers,” offers assistive technology for the visually impaired as well as a “welcome kiosk” that serves as the tour’s starting point. A podcast with descriptive audio is available on iTunes.
The public is also invited to “Art for Lunch.” Guests may stop in to view the sculptures at midday and bring a picnic lunch.
The sculpture garden is open for tours through October.
• Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild in Cutchogue is seeking submissions for its annual Young Artist Contest for ages 5 to 15. Work will be judged in three age categories. Each winner will receive $25 and professional art lessons with a guild member.
Each artist may submit one original drawing or painting, no larger than 9 inches by 12 inches. Entries will be accepted July 18 to July 31, with all work displayed at the guild’s art and craft fair Saturday, Aug. 1, on the Cutchogue Village Green. Winners will be announced during the fair.

• A series of 27 paintings by Gary Parker of East Marion is on view this month at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. Each is an oil on canvas depicting Orient Harbor.
• ‘William Steeple Davis, 1884-1961’ is the summer exhibit at Oysterponds Historical Society in Orient. The artist, who lived most of his life in Orient, was a prolific painter and photographer who documented the Orient and East Marion area in the first half of the 20th century.
The show opens Saturday, July 11, from 2 to 5 p.m. and will continue Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through the summer. Admission is free.
