Blotter: Man drinking in front of business nabbed on warrant

Police arrested a Southold man Saturday morning on a probation warrant after officers received a complaint that he was drinking in front of a Southold business, according to a police report.

Mark Hamlin was arrested around 6:45 a.m. on Hummel Avenue once officers discovered he had an active probation warrant, police said.

• A Westhampton man was arrested early Sunday morning after he was observed crossing the double yellow and white lines along Main Road in Southold, town police said.

Peter Ethier, 24, was stopped by police near Jasmine Lane shortly after 3 a.m., according to a police report. Officers said his breath smelled like “an alcoholic beverage” and that he was in possession of marijuana.

Mr. Ethier faces charges of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

• Someone stole a wallet from a car parked outside a Mattituck restaurant last Tuesday, police said.

The victim told police she always locks her car and believes someone used her keys to enter the vehicle, according to a police report. The wallet is worth $100, police said. Detectives are investigating the theft.

• Someone took a bicycle from the Greenport railroad dock Sunday morning, police said. The red mountain bike was reported missing about 10:30 a.m. and is worth $100, according to a police report.

• A Southold man told police that a generator worth more than $900 was taken from his Hyatt Road garage sometime last week.

The 10,000-watt generator was taken sometime between July 4 and July 11.

• A trespasser who’s been seen before on a Southold property allegedly stole a $350 statue, a Southold resident told police Sunday.

The Hill Road resident has noticed an “ongoing problem” with trespassing on his property and called police around 1:30 p.m. Sunday to report that a cement statue had been stolen, police said.

Police advised the man to install a motion-sensor light outside his home.

• Three weeks after a Mattituck mailbox was allegedly destroyed with a firecracker, another one was blown up with an explosive, possibly a firecracker, Saturday night, according to a police report.

A man told police that around 11 p.m., he heard a loud explosion. On Sunday morning, he found his mailbox “in pieces all over the street and front lawn” on Sound Beach Drive, police said.

Police said an M80 firecracker could have been used to damage the mailbox.

• A woman called Southold Town police from the Tall Ships festival in Greenport last Sunday to report a suspicious man.

He was described as wearing a sweatshirt with the hood up, gloves and a backpack while walking through the festival.

Two police officers stopped the man and learned that he was wearing the outfit as protection against the sun because of a skin condition, police said.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
