Peter Clarke steps down as Greenport BID president

Greenport BID president Peter Clarke had decided to step down from the position he’s held for the last three years.

During Thursday’s Village Board meeting, Trustee Julia Robins said Mr. Clarke’s resignation is effective immediately.

“He said he will work to make a smooth transition until an interim president takes over,” she said, adding his replacement will take over for the second half of his two-year term until the next election.

“It’s a great opportunity for somebody who wants to get more involved in what’s going on,” Ms. Robins said.

Mr. Clarke, who moved to Greenport and opened Clarke’s Garden on Main Street about five years ago, was tapped to succeed BID president Mike Acebo in January 2011. Mr. Acebo had led the BID since its inception in 1994.

During Mr. Clarke’s tenure, he’s helped plan the last two Tall Ships events and launched the BID’s enhanced website, among other accomplishments.

He didn’t attend Thursday’s meeting and wasn’t immediately available for comment.
