Cops: Woman drives car into bay at Founders Landing in Southold

car crashes into water at Founders Landing

A 20-year-old Southold woman left the roadway and drove her car into the bay at Founders Landing in Southold Monday evening, police said.

A witness to the accident told The Suffolk Times that the driver, who police said was sent to Eastern Long Island Hospital for evaluation, first parked her white Volkswagen Jetta in front of the boat ramp at around 5:30 p.m. and soon after “gunned her engine,” driving into the water.

As the car started to sink, stuffed animals from inside floated away as the driver exited the vehicle and struggled to swim, said the witness, who asked that her name not be published.

The witness said that a carpenter working at a nearby home swam to the woman and helped her to shore. Police did not provide an update on her condition and the hospital, as a policy, does not release a patient’s status to the media.

The Southold Fire Department then sent out a diver to check for passengers, but the woman had been driving alone.

Rapid Recovery removed the vehicle from the water and towed it to their shop.
