The Southold Planning Department will host a public forum in East Marion Thursday night to discuss the land-use chapter of the town’s drafted “Southold 2020” comprehensive plan for that specific hamlet.

The meeting will be held at the East Marion Fire Department at 7 p.m. Planning Director Heather Lanza will give a presentation on specific topics the town wants to include in the comprehensive plan and will then lead public discussion to gather input from residents.

Each of the other town hamlets will have later forums to discuss the draft, Ms. Lanza said.

A draft of the land-use chapter presented to a town board work session Tuesday morning lists a variety of goals, including prevention of overbuilding and “retail sprawl” similar to Route 58 in Riverhead. The draft also features requirements for all new development to use more modern sanitation systems to prevent nitrogen runoff.

In addition, the draft proposal would identify exactly where wine- and beer-tasting would be allowed in order to allow wineries, breweries and other farm-type locations serving alcohol to operate without disrupting residential areas.

Correction: The public forum Thursday will address the East Marion section of the draft only. The original article implied the entire draft proposal would be discussed.
