Southold News: Hidden City Orchestra to perform Saturday
I hope this finds you enjoying the back end of summer. We’ve been having such wonderful weather for the most part. What have you been up to?
I’ll start with birthdays. A few people got lost in the every-other-week schedule, so belated birthday greetings to Annie Auchincloss, who turned 25 July 30; John Bertschi, who turned 15 Aug. 10; Nick Baldwin, who turned 21 on Aug. 12, and Dan McCarthy, who also celebrated Aug. 12. Other birthdays are Stephanie Biggart, Aug. 14; Southold High School principal and dear friend Bill Galati on the 16th; Sue Fischer on the 18th; Aidan Walker, Aug. 19; Lyndsay Grathwohl, Aug. 21; and Victoria Tondo and Dorothy Galati, Aug. 22. Happy birthday to all!
Two couples are celebrating anniversaries this column: Chris and Andrea Manfredi on Aug. 19 and John and Linda Bertani on Aug. 24. Happy anniversary!

The Southold animal shelter has plenty of news. First up is Clear the Shelter, an endeavor sponsored by NBC Channel 4 to have as many animals as possible adopted this Saturday, Aug. 15. All adoption fees are waived. The shelter will open early at 8 a.m. and close late at 4 p.m. so come on down and find your furry friend or friends. My two wishes for finding a home go to Cinnie, a beautiful dog who seems fierce in her kennel but is a lover once she’s on neutral ground, and Angel, the office cat. Angel is a beautiful, friendly cat who enjoys being petted but not picked up, and has a urination problem. Both of these animals deserve a patient, loving “furever” home so they may thrive. There are other dogs, kittens and adult cats, and perhaps a bird or two if they aren’t adopted before Saturday. Refreshments will be served. (Volunteers: Don’t forget to bake!) You may also use this time to make donations, especially dry cat food for the pet food pantry.
Paws by the Bay Soiree is a fundraiser for the North Fork Animal Welfare League honoring Louis and Luba Corso. The event takes place Sunday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Wharf House at Founders Landing. There will be a buffet of hors d’oeuvres catered by Matt Kar of Jamesport Manor Inn along with an open bar and live music. Tickets can be purchased for $95 by calling the shelter at 631-765-1811, ext. 1.
Southold Historical Society will host a performance by Hidden City Orchestra at Horton Point Lighthouse this Saturday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. The Hidden City Orchestra, an ever-shifting ensemble of musicians and instruments organized by composer George Cork Maul, performs free improvisation, live music to silent film, music to spoken word, poetry and dance and pieces with audience participation. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the gate; children under 12 are free. Picnicking is welcome; remember to bring your own chair if you don’t want to sit on the lawn. If it rains, the performance will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Main Road. For more information, call 631-765-5500.
My next deadline is Aug. 23. Please get me your information ahead of time. And take a moment, several times a day, to appreciate what you have in your life. The hectic times often make it difficult to stop and take stock, but it sure does help turn that frown upside down!
