Mattituck News: Take a chance and become a PTSA member

The end of summer is bittersweet. The tourists are still here on weekends but the weekdays once again belong to the locals. School buses traveling the streets remind us that a new year has begun.

The start of school brings an opportunity to join the PTSA and be part of a great tradition of parents getting together to make the school experience better for our children. In the high school, the PTSA funds scholarships for seniors, special assemblies including one highlighting Shakespeare’s works, an ice skating trip to Greenport, monthly students of the month breakfasts and more. This year, your membership gets you a chance to win a ticket to the spring PTSA fashion show. Membership forms will be available at Open School Nights, Sept. 10 and 16. There’s a role for everyone, no matter how limited your time. Take a chance, become a member!

Students in grades 9-12 will kick off the year with a Yankee Candle fundraiser sponsored by the PTSA. Twenty percent of the proceeds will be go toward special events such as the prom and senior trip. Candle brochures will also be available during Open School Nights.

The summer season came to a close with magnificent weather and wedding celebrations. Best wishes to Billy Zuhoski and Stephanie Sweeney, who were married on the family tree farm. Trisha Tarpey and Tom Smith also held their nuptials at a local farm. May your years ahead be filled with love and laughter.

Founders Landing was the setting for Megan Pillai and Jon McKee’s vows this past weekend. Music was provided by the East End Jazz Quartet, made up of a couple of Megan’s former teachers from Mattituck High School. Best wishes for the next chapter of life’s journey.

Toasting their anniversaries are the following couples: Dot and Joe Pfaff, Sandy and Rick Gannon, Patty and Billy Young, Harold and Irene Wilsberg and David and Suzanne Martinez.

The season’s last concert at Macari Vineyards was a great way to close out August and attracted many fans of Dave Smith’s East End Jazz Quartet, including Marissa Russo and her parents, Jean Mahoney and her parents, Di and Alex Papdopoulos, Jim and Theresa McKenna, Sean Morgan, Anne and Samuel Gilvarry, Jacqui Portocarrero and daughter Fiona, Tom Brennan and Jane Nordstrom, Chris Robinson, Kathleen Galvin with her sister and brother-in-law and many more.

Celebrating birthdays as the season winds down are Kayla Gableman, Abby Gannon, Renee Kelly, Barbara MacLeod, Jenny Stype, Louis Troisi, Lexington Horton, Kim Ulmet, Cissy Scaramucci, Taylor Gildersleeve, Tim Costello, Kristy Palmer, Autumn Reichardt and Kimberly Scheer. A special birthday wish goes to my daughter Vanessa, who celebrates Sept. 12 in Boston. Happy birthday, Sweets!

Congratulations to Tom Batuello. After two years at Sarah Lawrence, he’ll spend a full year at Wadham College, Oxford University, studying literature, writing and, naturally, Shakespeare. What an accomplishment!

The after-school snack table sponsored by the MHS Athletic Booster Club is looking for new volunteers. It’s a great way to observe the kids and get to know them and requires only about an hour once or twice a month. To get more info or sign up, email [email protected].
