After absentee votes counted, Goggins sweeps Town Justice primaries

Mattituck attorney William Goggins has won all three primaries for the Republican, Conservative, and Independence party nominations for Southold Town Justice, according to unofficial results.

According to the Suffolk County Board of Elections, Mr. Goggins prevailed in the Republican primary with 566 votes to 434 for challenger Eileen Powers. Mr. Goggins also held off Ms. Powers and Democratic candidate Brian Hughes for the Conservative nomination, winning 41 votes to 26 and 9, respectively.

After the vote on Sept. 10, it appeared Ms. Powers, a trial attorney with a private practice in Riverhead, had eked out a victory in the Independence primary, earning a spot on the ballot by a single vote. But after absentee votes were tallied Monday, Mr. Goggins pulled ahead.

He pulled in 31 votes to Ms. Powers’ 26, also defeating the 16 votes Mr. Hughes won.

The results mean Mr. Goggins — who ran unsuccessfully against Judge William Price in 2013 — will have the backing of three political parties when he faces Mr. Hughes in the general election.

Southold Republican GOP chair Pete McGreevy said Ms. Powers and Mr. Goggins both ran “really, really strong campaigns.”

“Eileen worked really hard, Bill Goggins worked really hard,” Mr. McGreevy said. “They both got their message out there and in the end the voters decided who their preferred candidate was … We’re looking forward to November and know that Bill Goggins will be an asset to our town’s justice court.”

Neither Mr. Goggins nor Ms. Powers could be immediately reached for comment Tuesday.
