Greenport principal to host monthly education roundtables

Greenport High School graduation 2014

With a new school year and a new principal comes new events for parents.

Greenport secondary school principal Gary Kalish is hosting the first of what will be monthly roundtable discussions on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. in the high school library.

“Meetings like the Principal’s Roundtable are important to make connections and include parents and families in what is happening at the school,” Mr. Kalish said. “Parents and families are our partners in educating our students, and these meetings are designed to be one way we can collaborate on that mission.”

Everyone is invited to come speak with administrators, where conversations can cover (but aren’t limited to) AP courses, field trips, assessments and co-curricular activities. It will also give people the opportunity to listen to other families experiences and voice their questions and concerns, Mr. Kalish said.

For those who are unable to attend Thursday’s meeting, Mr. Kalish said he will be hosting the roundtables at different times throughout the year. He will also use the school website, social media and emails to share information regarding them.

“As a new member of the Porter community, I look forward to continuing to get to know the families,” he said. “Parents have a unique perspective on our students, and can offer valuable insight regarding the progress of our students. Parents are our students first teachers, and I hope to take advantage of that by hearing from them.”
