Howard Francis Malone

Former longtime Southold resident Howard Francis Malone died Sept. 30, surrounded by family at his son and daughter-in-law’s home in New London, N.H. He was 86. 

He was born March 29, 1929, in Brooklyn, to Ann (Gogarty) Malone and William A. Malone and later married Janet in Brooklyn.

Mr. Malone graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and for over 30 years, worked as chief engineer for Radiation Dynamics in Islandia. During this time he was awarded four international patents for particle accelerators.

A member of St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, Mr. Malone served as a former CCD instructor. He was a Knights of Columbus member and a past Grand Knight of Stirling Council.

Family members said he was a amateur radio operator, transmitting under the call sign W2HFM. He also enjoyed building model train boards.

Mr. Malone was predeceased by his wife in 2009 and is survived by his sons, Howard Jr. (Kathleen) of New London, N.H. and Brian (Frances) of Massapequa Park, N.Y.; his daughter, Carol (John) Hennecken, M.D., of Augusta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his brother, William and nephew, Billy.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.
