Three-peat for First Settlers! Southold wins county title

For the third consecutive year, the Southold boys soccer team reigns supreme among Suffolk County Class C schools. 

The First Settlers rode the second-half scoring combination of seniors Peter Fouchet and Joey Woryz to a 2-0 victory over Pierson/Bridgehampton at the Diamond in the Pines in Coram Saturday afternoon.

Southold (14-2-1) captured the county Class C crown for the seventh time in 11 years. The First Settlers have earned 21 county titles — at the Class C and D levels — since 1978.

After a scoreless first half, Southold broke the deadlock with 15 minutes, 20 seconds remaining as Fouchet drilled a Woryz’s pass from the left flank into the upper right far post past goalkeeper Kevin Feliciano.

The two proved deadly again with 5:06 as they connected on an insurance goal. This time Woryz sent a free kick from the left side to the far post, where Fouchet headed home for a two-goal advantage. It was Fouchet’s 19th goal of the season and Woryz’s 10th assist.

The First Settlers, who finished atop League VIII with a 10-0 record, have defeated the Whalers (8-9) three times this season. That includes wins of 4-0 on Sept. 29 and 1-0 on Oct. 14.

There will be no Long Island Class C championship game because there are no schools competing in Nassau County at that level.

Southold will meet Section I champion Solomon Schechter at Lakeland High School at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Schechter (10-4-2) secured that Class C crown via a 2-1 victory over Hamilton (8-9-1) on Friday as Miles Ogihara set up the equalizer and scored the game-winner, a golden goal in overtime.
