Coastal flood advisory issued for western Peconic Bay
The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for the western Peconic Bay area from 1 p.m. through 6 p.m. tomorrow.
According to the NWS, “onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore” in the region.
The advisory was also issued for for coastal western Long Island Sound.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, high tide in South Jamesport will hit at 4:39 a.m. and 5 p.m. tomorrow and in Northville, at 3:58 a.m. and 4:18 p.m.
In New Suffolk, high tide will hit at 4:17 a.m. and 4:50 p.m and at Mattituck Inlet, at 4:02 a.m. and 4:24 p.m. At Hashamomuck Beach, high tide is due at 3:54 a.m. and 4:17 p.m.
Tidal departures are generally expected to be one to two feet above astronomical tide levels through Saturday, according to the NWS.
Joaquin is considered a category 3 hurricane passing over the Bahamas. It is expected to “pass well east of the coast of the United States,” according to the NWS.
However, that doesn’t mean locals may not feel any effects.
“A prolonged period of elevated water levels and large waves will affect the mid-Atlantic region, causing significant beach and dune erosion with moderate coastal flooding likely.”
