Key Food purchases Mattituck Waldbaum’s store

Shoppers curious to know which supermarket chain will replace Waldbaum’s in Mattituck have their answer: Key Food.

The New York City supermarket chain was the successful bidder in an auction last week, according to documents filed Monday in Southern District Bankruptcy Court. Best Yet was the second bidder, documents show.

Key Food, which currently has locations in Kings Park and Farmingville, also operates stores in other parts of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. It was founded in Brooklyn in 1937 and is headquartered in Staten Island.

Key Food has already begun to advertise job openings at the Mattituck location. The online ads state that interviews and training will take place at the company’s Kings Park location 51 miles away.

The Mattituck Waldbaum’s had been listed among roughly 270 stores its parent company, Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, was seeking to “sell or assign” as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to court documents filed last month.

A&P has operated a store at Mattituck Plaza since 1972, the documents show.
