Suffolk County workers switched on a new traffic light at the intersection of Route 48 and Depot Lane Wednesday morning, the site of a deadly limousine crash that claimed the lives of four women this summer.

Legislator Al Krupski had said the traffic signal was in the works before the fatal July crash, which injured another 6 people, including both the limousine driver and the driver of a pickup truck. Authorities say the crash occurred when the truck — driven by Southold resident Steven Romeo — collided with the limousine as it was making a U-turn to head west on Route 48.

Mr. Romeo was later charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with the incident. The limo driver was not charged.

The new light doesn’t feature a left turn signal, though signs warn drivers to yield to oncoming traffic when turning.
