Cutchogue News: Village Green holiday events

When you see a 97-year-old surrounded by many loved ones spanning many generations, occasion after occasion, you know that person is worth listening to.

Sue Stype’s father, Troy Baydala, is one such person. “I pray every morning for God to give me the grace to smile at people, especially ones I don’t know,” he said. “You know, love thy neighbor as thyself.” Amen.

Bravo to Cutchogue East students Abby Tyler, Luke Couch and Jude Couch, who participated in the 35th annual Howard Hovey Day of Tuba and Euphonium presented by the Suffolk County Music Education Association. Over 200 tuba and euphonium players took a master class with Mike Roylance, principal tuba player with the Boston Symphony and a professor at Boston University and the New England Conservatory. They also enjoyed listening to and playing with an ensemble of accomplished adult performers.

Congratulations to the MHS girls volleyball team on winning the Suffolk County Class tournament for the third year in a row — and going on to become Long Island champs! Good luck at the state championship Saturday!

The Cutchogue Holiday House Tour is Saturday, Dec. 5. Visit beautiful, festively decorated homes and enjoy wine tastings, appetizers and desserts. Each stop has been paired with a vineyard, restaurant or business to create a unique experience. Tickets are $75; advance purchase required. Visit sanninovineyard.com or call 631-735-9024 for more information.

Weddings are a blessing — even more so when your father, Pastor Sal Bernardo, officiates and your grandfather, the Rev. Jerry Stewart, participates! Darlene Bernardo was radiant as she watched her husband join their son Josh in marriage to the love of his life and best friend, Taryn Buttafuocco, at Bethpage Assembly of God. The couple, who first met at age 3, realized while celebrating the wedding of Josh’s sister Erica and brother-in-law Tyler that there might be a future for them! Sept. 18 was a beautiful day for the nuptials and the reception that followed at Giorgio’s of Baiting Hollow. Taryn’s parents, Cindi and Dan Buttafuocco, will be moving to Southold soon, making the couple’s family time that much more rich. Congratulations and God bless!

Need a unique holiday gift? Stop by the Cutchogue New Suffolk Historical Council Carriage House gift shop Saturdays and Sundays between 1 and 4 p.m.

The Mattituck Junior High Players present “Murderous Night at the Museum,” a family-friendly murder mystery comedy with audience participation. Showtimes are Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19 and 20, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets are available at the door for $7; $5 for seniors and students; or non-perishable food donations.

Cutchogue Village Green holiday celebrations begin Saturday, Dec, 5, 4:30-6 p.m. with “Carols with Carol” and a tree lighting. On Sunday, Dec. 6, North Fork Reform Synagogue will light the community menorah at 4 p.m., followed by a Hanukkah celebration at the synagogue with personal menorah lightings, song, prayer and refreshments. All are welcome!

Celebrate Hanukkah with Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport on Sunday, Dec. 6. All are welcome to gather at Mitchell Park at 5 p.m. for the unveiling and lighting of the new menorah designed and built by former mayor David Nyce and then head to the shul for latkes and desserts.

Cutchogue New Suffolk Library will hold a book discussion of “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?” by Maria Semple on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. and Lego-mania for grades 3-6 (register) the same day at 4 p.m. There will be a Family Flick, “Russell Madness,” at 4 p.m. Nov. 20. On Saturday, Nov. 21, you can make a fresh boxwood tabletop tree for the holidays at 10 a.m. (register; materials fee $10) and tweens in grades 5-8 can register for Glitter Nails at 1 p.m. And at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, there’s PJ Storytime with “Captain Pajamas” for ages 3-8.

Life presents peaks and valleys, but even in a valley there’s something to be thankful for. This holiday reminds us that the point of being thankful is to be giving.

Happy Thanksgiving!
