Greenport News: Chinese auction and spaghetti dinner Tuesday

It’s December already!

Although I think Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday — when nothing’s expected and we just gather together with those we love — I do love Christmas and the warm spirit it brings.

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church hosts overnight guests of Maureen’s Haven on the third Friday of each month (and the fifth Friday when there is one). Volunteers from the community are always welcome — as are donations of warm socks, jackets, mittens/gloves, hats and scarves, plus toiletry items, combs, lip balm and new men’s and women’s undergarments. Call 477-0662 to volunteer or get more information.

Celebrate Hanukkah with Congregation Tifereth Israel, Sunday, Dec. 6, when the new menorah designed and built by David Nyce will be unveiled and then lit in at 5 p.m. in Mitchell Park. Afterward, there will be latkes and desserts at the synagogue.

Greenport High School’s Class of 2016 will hold a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children and senior citizens. They can be purchased from any senior class member or at the door.

Welcome to Paula Nickerson, the new interim athletic director at GHS. From what I’m told, she has plenty of experience as both a principal and an A.D. so she will be a welcome addition to the “family.”

Winter concerts at Greenport schools this year are scheduled as follows. The high school concert will be Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. and the elementary students’ concert will be Wednesday, Dec. 9, with a “preview” at 1 p.m. and the “official” performance at 7 p.m. All will take place in the school auditorium and the public is invited to attend. Admission is free.

Extra-special birthday wishes go out this week to my husband, Jim, on Dec. 5, and to his sister, Cindy Tooker, who will celebrate Dec. 6. Love you both!

Also having birthdays in the near future are “David T” Tuthill and Laura Atkins on Dec. 3; Amanda Golz, Danielle Hubbard and Dan Letteriello on the 4th; Erica Gaud, Mary Kathleen Sands, Tom Wood, Victoria Johnson and Ivan Suarez on the 5th; Michele Jensen, Kelsey Hubbard, Jean Harris, Maegan Ramnarine and Delaney Macchirole on the 6th; F. J. Kiernan on the 7th; Chris Golden, Rob Lehmann and Brittany Doucett on the 8th; Jeff Andrade and Camilo Torres on the 9th; Linda Owen and Kay Kettering Welch on the 10th; Leslie Parker, Dantre Langhorne, Laura Riggins and Krista Quillin on the 11th; my cousin Shawn Cutts on the 12th; Jim’s aunt, MaryAnn Dinizio, on the 13th; Kyle Tuthill on the 14th; another cousin, Nicole Wallace, and Craig Richter on the 15th; and Cassandra Kalin, Jeanine Bishop and Billy O’Brien on the 16th.

Wishes for a very happy anniversary to Diane and Bernie Purcell, who will celebrate their 30th on Dec. 8, and RuthAnn and P.J. Corazzini, whose 28th anniversary is Dec. 12.
