Virginia Helen Leavay

Former longtime Southold resident Virginia Helen Leavay of Greenport died Dec. 17 at the age of 93. 

The daughter of Marion Beatrice (Le Strange) and Michael Francis Barry, she was born Sept. 14, 1922, in New York City. She received an academic scholarship at Cathedral High School in New York City and in 1940, graduated from Grace Institute Business College, also in New York City.

On Feb. 21, 1942, she married Edward Terence Leavay in New York City.

Ms. Leavay was a homemaker and from 1964 to 1973, worked as a personal secretary to the director of Levittown Public Library. She was a member of St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Family members said she was a ballroom dancer and a ballroom dancing instructor.

Predeceased by her husband in 2007; her son, Christopher in 1952; and her daughter Jeanne Marie in 1970, she is survived by her son Kevin James Leavay, of Sag Harbor and Terence Edward Leavay of Southold; her daughters Suzan Donleavy-Johnston of Barryville, N.Y. and Kathleen Werner of Eastport; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice.
