It was another banner year for Meg Tuthill of Southold on the track. The McGann-Mercy middle-distance/distance runner qualified for the state championships in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

She began 2015 during the indoor season with a second-place finish in the 1,500 at the small school county championship. She also placed third in the 1,000 at the state qualifier meet to earn a trip the state championships. It was the first time in her track and field career she qualified for the state meet in an individual event. At the state championships in Ithaca she finished 11th overall in the 1,000.

The outdoor season saw not only Tuthill excel on the track, but many of her teammates. The Monarchs sent Tuthill and eight other runners to the state championships in Albany. Mercy completed a sweep by sending all three of its relay teams to the state meet: the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800.

Mercy’s 4×800 team of Tuthill, Kaitlyn Butterfield, Olivia Kneski and Maddie Joinnides clocked a time of 9 minutes 23.96 seconds to lead the Monarchs to a third-place finish in Division II.

It was a busy weekend for Tuthill, who also competed in two individual events — the 800 and 1,500. After running a personal best time a week earlier at the state qualifier meet, Tuthill turned in another impressive time — albeit slightly slower — to finish fourth in Division II. In the 1,500 Tuthill finished seventh.

Mercy’s 4×400 team was 14th and the 4×100 team was 16th.

Devyn O’Brien also competed in an individual event at the state meet, placing 18th in the 3,000.
