Police say a Greenport man was driving drunk when he crashed into a telephone pole in Mattituck early Monday and fled the scene.

A police dog team eventually tracked the man down and cops arrested him, according to a news release.

According to the report, 20-year-old Sergio Gatica was headed east on Route 25 near Wagon Wheel Road when his vehicle crashed off the roadway, hit an embankment and flipped, hitting a telephone pole.

Mr. Gatica fled the scene, but was found “shortly thereafter,” Southold Town police said. Police found he was intoxicated and charged him with two misdemeanors for DWI and fleeing the scene of a motor vehicle accident. He was taken to Eastern Long Island hospital to be treated for minor injuries, and was later held at police headquarters to await arraignment, police said.
