Elizabeth Ann Brown

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Brown, of Kirwan Hall Farm, Eastville, Va., died Dec. 3, surrounded by her family. 
She was born in Manhattan to Armistead Cyril Smith and M. Florence Smith on Feb. 6, 1945. She married Garrison Mack Brown Sept. 28, 1969, to of East Marion.

With her husband, Betty owned and operated Aquebogue Veterinary Hospital for over 20 years. There in Aquebogue, she realized a lifelong dream with the creation of Small Holdings Farm, a vegetable farm and 17 acre raw-milk dairy, the last of its kind on Long Island at the time.

Throughout her working career and family life, she devoted endless volunteer hours to small business, conservation, and planning efforts on the North Fork of Long Island as president of the North Fork Environmental Council, Riverhead Garden Club, and Townscape Inc. She was appointed to the governor’s East End Economic Task Force, the Brown Tide Task Force, and served as chairman of the Riverhead Conservation Advisory Council.

Betty and her husband retired to Kirwan Hall Farm in Eastville, Va. in 1998 where she continued to enjoy gardening and raising animals. Her four children soon relocated to the area as well. Her love of all things old led to a fulfilling career in the buying and selling of antiques and vintage wares. Other endeavors included the ownership of the Peacock Motor Inn in Cape Charles, and Bloomers Garden Shop in Eastville. Though her interests were many, a vast majority of her time was spent with her five grandchildren. Betty was well known for her kindness, generosity, unique spirit and sense of humor.

Betty is survived by her husband, Garrison Mack Brown; four children, Daniel A. Brown, Garrison M. Brown II, Laureen Brown Klingel, and Sarah Elizabeth Drummond; daughter-in-law, Lauren Brown; son-in-law, Jeff Klingel; five grandchildren, Alexander Brown, Molly Brown, Katherine Brown, Kailynn Drummond, and Halsey Brown Klingel. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Smith of North Kingstown, R.I., her nephew, Ehren Smith and nieces, Morgan and Emma Smith also of North Kingstown as well as her cousin, Pamela Bluss of Linden, Va.

Funeral Services for Betty were held Dec. 6, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Cape Charles in Virginia. She was interred at Cape Charles Cemetery.
