Clement J. Charnews

Clement “Clem” J. Charnews of Southold died at his home Jan. 12. He was 86 and had been ill for four months.

He was born May 20, 1929, in Southold to John and Julia Charnews and was a graduate of Southold High School. On June 5, 1949, he married Cornelia Czelatka at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

Clem was a farmer with Charnews Farms, which was operated by his father and his father’s brothers until the early 1960s. He then worked as a union carpenter and later with local builders.

Surviving are his wife, Cornelia; two children, Clement Jr. and Ellen Charnews, both of Southold; four grandchildren, Bonnie Oakley Charnews, Melanie Charnews, Joseph Charnews and Katie Mazzafero; and two great-grandchildren, Sophie Oakley and Elleandra Anna Rogers-Charnews. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Edward and Daniel.

The family received visitors Jan. 14 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where prayer services were conducted by Father Piotr Narkiewicz. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 15 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church by Father Mariusz Gorazd. Interment was at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery in Southold.
