The blizzard that dropped as much as two feet of snow in western Suffolk County this past weekend forced the Section XI track and field league championships to be canceled and there is no makeup date.

The boys championship was originally to be Saturday and the girls Sunday at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.

Limited availability of the facility, and the fact that the five league meets take up an entire day, mean the league championships will not be made up and teams will turn shift focus to the county championships.

The boys small school championship is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday followed by the large school championship at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1. The girls small school championship is 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The girls large school championship is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Mattituck, which has a first-year winter track program for the boys and girls, will compete in the small school meets.

There’s still a chance officials may score a league meet based on the results of the county championship. Riverhead girls coach Justin Cobis said that’s still to be determined and there’s a seeding meeting on Thursday for the county meets.
