Three people were rescued Sunday after their boat hit a sandbar on Robins Island, Southold Town police said.

Joshua Haggerty, 33, of Southold was operating a 20-foot console boat and travelling west through Peconic Bay shortly after 8:30 p.m. when it ran aground, police said.

They were eventually able to make contact with someone on land, who then relayed the message for help to the Southold Town Police.

Mr. Haggerty and his two passengers, Gina Bruswitz, 25 of Riverhead and Anthony Ellis, 29, of Mattituck, reported they were stranded and suffering from hypothermia, officials said.

Southold Town police, Cutchogue and Mattituck fire departments responded to the scene and transported the victims to the New Suffolk boat ramp, officials said.

Ms. Bruswitz and Mr. Ellis were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, police said. Mr. Haggerty refused medical attention, officials said.

No other details about the incident were immediately available.
