Wrestling: Split Tuckers team dominates Stony Brook, 70-3
While coach Cory Dolson took six of his top-line Mattituck/Greenport/Southold high school wrestlers to the Eastern States Classic at Sullivan County Community College, the rest of the Tuckers were left to face Stony Brook on Friday under the charge of their assistant coach, Ronnie Rosso.
Asked if the Tuckers had sent there “B” team out onto the mat at Mattituck High School, Rosso said, “I’d say it was a little A, a little B and a little C.”
Even so, they merited an “A” grade for their performance. Despite having only a few first-stringers wrestle, the Tuckers still stomped Stony Brook, 70-3, for their 27th consecutive league win over a four-year period. They brought their record to 22-1, 5-0 in Suffolk County League VII.
It was a pinfest, too. Sean Feeney (106 pounds), Ben Webb (113), Justin Lake (120), Johnny Lisowy (132), Jake Skrezec (152), Ben Schmidt (160), Tim Schmidt (182) and Gage Suglia (195) all won on pins.
Feeney had the quickest pin of the day, stopping Martin Lee in 25 seconds. Webb didn’t need much longer, pinning Noah Dahi in 55 seconds. First-period pins were also recorded by Lake (against Nate Bloumes), Lisowy (against Dan Moreno), Ben Schmidt (against Mark Hou) — all in 1:01 — and Tim Schmidt (in 1:07 against Tom Hull).
Skrezec turned in possibly the most thrilling win of the day. After trailing, 4-2, Skrezec put Jacob Tutujka’s back to the mat 44 seconds into the second period.
Suglia pinned Harry Hou at 3:45.
The fifth bout on the card (and the fourth actually wrestled) was the first to go beyond one period, but it wasn’t close. The Tuckers’ Stephen Massotti beat Justin Moreno, 20-7.
The Tuckers took three forfeits that went in favor of Brian Feeney at 99 pounds, Dan Harkin at 138 and Dylan Marlborough at 170.
The Tuckers had taken a commanding 40-0 lead before Kyle Broomes brought Stony Brook (2-6, 1-4) its only points of the contest with a 4-1 defeat of Tom Salice at 145 pounds.
It was the first official varsity coaching win for Rosso.
