Mattituck News: Another round of happy birthdays

With the recent cold snap, everyone is quietly praying that the snow disappears, the ice melts and the crocuses fight hard to push through the frozen ground. With only 11 days of February remaining, signs of spring will be appearing shortly.

Let’s begin by celebrating those with birthdays coming in the next two weeks. Happy birthday to Bryan Diffley, Jeffrey Hauser, Rebecca McDonald, Carolyn McDonald, Christine Shanahan, Virginia Motto, John Bradley, Daniel Leaden, Barbara Jean Smith, Alexandra Zaweski, Matthew Brisotti, James Finora and Pat Mudd.

Attention kids in grades 4-8! Come join Dr. Anne Smith, superintendent of Mattituck-Cutchogue Schools, and district librarians for “The Read.” Pick up a copy of Linda Mullaly Hunt’s book “Fish in a Tree,” read it and join in a discussion to celebrate the book on Wednesday, March 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Mattituck High School library. Pizza, clementines, snacks and water will be served.

The PTSA Fashion Show, the event of the year, is right around the corner. The show takes place Thursday, April 7, at Vineyard Caterers. Tickets go on sale for one night only on Tuesday, March 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the high school lobby. Tickets are $55 and each table can accommodate 12 people.

Are you interested in running for school board and giving back to your community? It’s not too late to pick up a petition from Cutchogue West for this year’s election. Petitions are due Monday, April 18. Discussion is underway as to whether the board will remain at seven members or be reduced to five. For more information, attend the next BOE meeting March 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Congratulations to Chloe Janis for receiving an Award of Excellence in the Parrish Art Museum’s exhibit.

Nora Zuhoski has much to be proud of! She passed her FE exam in civil engineering and will take part in a summer internship in Spain. The University of Rhode Island senior will graduate with certification in Spanish and civil engineering. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

If you didn’t have the chance to see this year’s high school musical, “Fiddler on the Roof,” you missed an extraordinary experience. The music, set, costumes and performances were outstanding. Hats off to Anne Gilvarry and Jacob Fowle for helping our students reach new heights! Can’t wait until next year!

Last chance! If you have not yet joined the PTSA for this year, you haven’t been entered in the raffle for a free ticket to this year’s fashion show. The drawing is Feb. 10, so visit mufsd.com, follow the link and join today.
