Featured Letter: Executing a plan for Tall Ships

Tall Ships

I congratulate all the members of the 2015 Tall Ships committee and the volunteers for their determination and hard work toward a successful event.

I was a member of the committee and sat with this group for a year prior to the event and I will tell you that the committee did an excellent job planning and coordinating and never wavered, even though some members of the public and the government doubted its success.

The event was a challenge for our department because not only was it anticipated to bring in large crowds to Greenport Village, it was doing so on Fourth of July weekend, already our busiest time of the year. Our department planned for and executed our Action Plan for the event, which covered five days overall, and I commend every member of our department for their time and commitment to its execution. We also reached out for and received assistance from other East End departments, namely the New York State Police, Shelter Island PD, East Hampton Town PD and Southampton Town PD.

Personally, I enjoyed participating in the Tall Ships Challenge committee and its many volunteers. I think it’s a great event for Greenport Village and its residents and highlights all of its assets to the attendees. It is also important to recognize the support the Southold Town Board gave this event, allowing our department to devote the manpower and resources to make it happen.
