Marilyn Elliott Schroeder

Former Southold resident Marilyn Schroeder passed away Feb. 17, 2016, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She was 83.

Marilyn was born in Pittsburgh March 24, 1932, to Victor Elliott and Irma Catherine (Reiter). She spent her childhood in Fox Chapel, Pa. where her father was a certified public accountant employed by the Pittsburgh Field Club. She met her husband, George W. Schroeder, while working at a lunch counter in Pompano Beach, Fla. After living in Southold for 42 years, the couple returned to the place where they first met and enjoyed several years of retirement together before George’s passing in 1996.

In between raising her five children, Marilyn worked as a real estate agent and in several area restaurants including the Original Barge in Southold. Later on, she helped her daughter Amelia establish and operate The Cheese Platter in Southold.

Marilyn was an avid reader and loved to walk around Hog’s Neck in Southold, the neighborhood where she raised her children. She also loved to garden. After moving to Florida, Marilyn spent her time as a “red hat lady” and volunteering in a local hospital. She became a competitive bridge player and was a member of a bridge club in Fort Lauderdale. She also enjoyed socializing with the many friends she had made in her community.

In addition to her husband, Marilyn was predeceased by her siblings Victor Elliott, Margaret Trout and Joe Elliott. She is survived by her children, Marilyn Schroeder (Dave Lynn) of Pompano Beach, George Schroeder (Gwynn) of Cutchogue, Carolyn Luhrs (Richard) of Mooresville, N.C., Amelia Hukill (William) of East Marion and Allison Mahaffy of Greenport. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren, Gillian, Geoffrey, Daniel and Matthew Schroeder, Ian and Elizabeth Luhrs, Adam Hukill and Lara, Anna and Charlotte Mahaffy, and three great-grandchildren, Jude Heatley, Evangeline Schroeder and Violet Hukill.
