Problem at Greenport power plant forces test to be rescheduled

The power was supposed to go out in Greenport for a short time early Friday morning as the village got ready for a state-required test. But while some residents did lose power for about an hour around 3 a.m., others didn’t, village officials said today.

Crews found an issue with the electric system when the village attempted to switch power loads from one transformer to another, which is required during a Demonstrated Maximum Net Capability test. The cause of the problem hasn’t been determined yet.

Village officials had previously said a design flaw in the $5.8 million upgrade of the village’s power plant has prevented it from being able to switch from one transformer to another without first shutting down the system.

According to a previous Suffolk Times report, the Village Board authorized legal action against Genesys Engineering, the company that designed the upgrade, last October. No lawsuit has yet been filed.

According to a statement released by Greenport Village, the planned outage will be rescheduled to a later date as crews investigate the issues behind the problem and make any needed repairs.
