Susan Deans Sweeney

Susan Deans Sweeney of Mattituck passed peacefully at her home Feb. 24, 2016, at age 56. Over the last 18 years Sue courageously fought three separate battles with breast cancer.

The daughter of David A. Deans and Barbara A. Crossley, Sue was born May 21, 1959, in Jamaica, Queens. She received her Bachelor of Science from SUNY/Oneonta in 1981 and her Master of Science in education from LIU Southampton in 1985.

Sue was an elementary school teacher at William Floyd School District for 28 years. She was a masterful teacher, not only during the school week, but every day of her life. She taught us love, kindness, compassion and the joy of living.

Sue loved to read, go to the beach or pool and spend time with family and friends. Most of all, she loved to laugh.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Terry, her son, Steven, and her daughter, Carolyn, all of Mattituck; as well as her mother, Barbara Kelling of Laurel; her sisters, Virginia Russotti of Setauket, Dianne Stumpf of Laurel, Mary Kate DiGregorio of Cutchogue; and her brother, Thomas, of Storrs, Conn.

A memorial Mass in celebration of Sue’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt will officiate.

In respect of Sue’s wishes, donations may be made to team “Cuz We Have Faith” for the 2016 Avon Walk to End Breast Cancer. Family members will be walking in her memory in the Washington D.C. Avon 39 Walk in April.
