Greenport News: East End Lions Club’s corned beef, cabbage dinner

We live in such a wonderful community. I know of no other way to express it.

Jim and I were among those who attended last Friday’s CAST benefit at Peconic Landing. The food was terrific, the company even better and all the proceeds go to those in need in our community. A great big thank-you to everyone responsible for this event.

The East End Lions Club will host its 62nd annual corned beef and cabbage dinner at the Soundview Restaurant Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17, from noon to 8 p.m. each day. A scallop dinner is offered for those who aren’t in the mood for corned beef and takeout will be available. The cost is $20 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

The annual Music in Our Schools concert is set for Monday, March 14, at 7 p.m. in Greenport school auditorium. It includes the elementary and high school bands and choruses as well as the high school a cappella group.

The school garden committees of Southold and Greenport have teamed up again to present the fourth annual Souper Bowls fundraiser Sunday, March 13, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Greenport school cafeteria. Bring your own bowl and spoon and sample as many soups as you like from a wide array prepared and generously donated by chefs from dozens of area restaurants. There will be live music, kids’ crafts and a bake sale — it’s a great way to mingle with your neighbors on the last weekend of winter! Proceeds will benefit both school gardens. The tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. They’ll only be on sale at the door on the day of the event.

There are two updates to the Greenport High School honor roll, which was published two weeks ago. Congratulations to seniors Rosa Hernandez, whose name belongs on the high  honor roll, and Danielle Fauteux for her inclusion on the honor roll.

In my last column, I mentioned spring sports starting for all varsity and JV teams. Now it’s time to mention junior high students. Your spring season begins Monday, March 28, and, according to the school calendar, your sports contracts are due by the 21st. Softball is offered for girls, baseball for boys and track and field for both.

Daylight saving time begins this weekend. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

The happiest of birthdays is wished to Esther Tedeschi and Josh Rowsom on March 10; Kevin Quillin, Donna Zurek Goldense and Janet Blados on the 11th; Emelia Jacobi and Joe Capuano on the 13th; Christie Hallock, Scot Boken, Becky Manwaring and Jessica Terry on the 14th; my wonderful next-door neighbor Ann Stanilaus, Doug Webb, Vin Tirelli, Kevin Butterfield and Kyle Kozora on the 15th; Brianne Manwaring, Danny Kart and Patrick Walden on the 16th; Kathy Dimon, my cousin Sheliagh O’Heaney, Patrick Gagen, Tiffany McKenzie and Christine Harrison on the 17th; Mike Milovich, Jennifer Neville Beebe, Greg Hallock, Andrea Manfredi, Cathy Bumble and Brian Pruitt on the 18th; Stephen Rock and Victoria Staples on the 19th; Jared Doroski, Pete Harris and Courtney Martocchia on the 20th; Carla McMann on the 21st; my nephew Seamus O’Connell, Alyssa Kollen, Liam Ameden and Rachael Bofinger on the 22nd; and Shannon Sage, my sister-in-law Joylene Dinizio Navarro, “Butch” Corwin and Sean Walden on the 23rd.
